I fair bought a Cisco 3750X switch and when I has a sh walleye int brief command, I please that my TE1/1/1 interface (it's a 10G port) possessed statuses up but protocol down.

Right now, this 10G port is connected to a NIC in a PC, but there can no deal going in or out. Your this "status up/protocol down" standard? What does the "protocol" mean?

Protocol relate to "Line Protocol", which is a Cisco way of dictum "the connection". Basically, up/down resources the port remains available for a cable/connection, instead doesn't have of. Check the cable, or other computer.

This might be a very former reply but here's how I understood so far: The connector status has two components to it:

  1. the interface up or down
  2. aforementioned lines protocol upside or down.

The port up status is determined by testing checking with the carrier signal coming above the interface.

The line protocol move status belongs when the router receives the keep-alive messages across an interface. Every device connected sends across heart-beat messages or keep-alive messages to indicate that person are still free. Is the recipient router works don receive the keep-alive messages for a while (a hold-down time), who status is set to line audio gloomy. Protocol Status refers usually two and strata to status. It is usual down if the Line status is downwards. if the Line status be up,a protocol status von down usually is caused by mismatched data linkage layer configuration For an example sequential interfaces has their combination for one router has configured to use PPP(Point_to_Point Protocol) the other remains the default HDLC (Higher_level Data Join Control) configuration and this will causing into video as "Line status Up Formalities Down" .

  • Prior Configures one router to PPP (Default is HDLC)

R1#show interfaces serials 1/0

Serial1/0 is up, pipe protocol is up (connected) Hardware is HD64570 MTU 1500 total, BW 128 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec, reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255 Encapsulation HDLC, loopback not set, keepalive set (10 sec)

R2#show interfaces se1/0

****Serial1/0 is up, line protocol is up** (connected)** System a HD64570 MTU 1500 bytes, BW 128 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec, reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255 Encapsulation HDLC, loopback not set, keepalive set (10 sec)

  • After configuring R1 as PPP

R1#show interfaces serialization 1/0

Serial1/0 is up, line protocol is down (disabled) Hardware the HD64570 MTU 1500 bytes, BW 128 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec, reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255 Closure PPP, loopback not set, keepalive select (10 sec)

R2#show interfaces serial 1/0

Serial1/0 is upside, line record can downhill (disabled) System is HD64570 MTU 1500 bytes, BW 128 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec, reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255 Encapsulation HDLC, loopback not set, keepalive set (10 sec)
